The formation of FIFA in the early 1900s was done to oversee international football matches as the sport gained popularity worldwide.

On 21 May 1904, FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) was established in Paris. The founder members were the national organizations of Britain, Denmark, France, Netherland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. On the same day the German Association also pronounced their interest of affiliating through a telegram.

Early History- The Formation of FIFA

In 1906,  the 1st President and one of the key person in establishment of FIFA the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), French journalist Robert Guerin was supplanted by Daniel Burley Woolfall an English football executive and a member of the association. A key aim during his presidency was to achieve uniform football rules on an international level.

At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, England, FIFA introduced an official football tournament. Eight entries were accepted and were included in the tournament draw, including two from France: the main team and a B team.[3] Both Hungary and Bohemia withdrew after the draw and before the start of play, leaving six teams to contest the tournament.

Great Britain won the gold medal representing the United Kingdom (Great Britain and Ireland), although all the players were from England.

Evolution- The Formation of FIFA

From 1908 to 1913, the membership of FIFA stretched past Europe to South Africa, South America and North America. Argentina and Chili became the member of FIFA in 1912 followed by Canada and USA in 1913.

But unfortunately, FIFA witnessed a major survival setback during World War 1. Numerous players were sent to war, and the likelihood of going global was seriously constrained. Later after the war and Woolfall’s death, Dutchman Carl Hirchman became the 2nd General Secretary of FIFA, serving from 1906 to 1931. He  kept the organization from falling apart, almost single-handedly and at his own costs, operating from his offices in Amsterdam.[4] He was FIFA’s interim president until Jules Rimet was elected its third president in March 1921.
